Maybe you’ve heard about something called a Promise Neighborhood. Read an article about one online somewhere. But did you know there was one in your own backyard? Exactly who are we and what do we do? Let us explain.
We’re based on a national model that is active in more than 100 cities that takes a neighborhood-friendly approach to ensuring the long-term future of neighborhoods by focusing on the success of children in cities. Focusing on children in a single neighborhood allows us to support their growth and success based on their unique community’s approach to carrying out a set of shared principles:
- Physical and social experiences shape the way children learn. Addressing these for an entire neighborhood helps achieve the scale necessary for entire communities to improve.
- Communities must work collaboratively to build the fabric of support for their children.
- All children deserve access to the highest quality programs and support services from the day they are born thru the day they start their career.
- Feedback from children and families is vital to supporting success.
Every child can be successful and everyone has a part to play in supporting their success.
We pull together partners from within the area to help us in assisting residents of our neighborhoods and their families with the services they need in order for their children to succeed in school and in life.
Each Promise Neighborhood is anchored by great schools with a goal of supporting every aspect of a student’s life – inside and beyond school walls – from birth through college and career. In the City of Allentown’s Old Allentown Neighborhood, we’re focusing on a nine-block area where partners are committed to ensuring children are healthy and ready to learn, being accountable for children’s success, and improving the safety of children as they travel to and from neighborhood schools.
But we need your help to be successful. In addition to our partners, we need members of the neighborhood and community at large to step up and participate; to help better their community by getting involved and staying active.
Visit this page of our site and take the pledge to be a part of Allentown Promise Neighborhood today.
